Stryper - Murder by Pride

Un sólido proyecto que deja a los fans de la banda con 12 buenas razones para seguir admirando a los pioneros del Metal con mensaje cristiano.

Exactamente 25 años después del lanzamiento del mítico EP The Yellow and Black Attack la banda Stryper demuestra que puede reinventarse con los diversos elementos que han recogido individual y colectivamente a lo largo de los años.

Una carrera ascendente, controversia, cambio de imagen, el ocaso, la separación, una carrera solista de su vocalista y líder Michael Sweet, proyectos independientes de Oz Fox (guitarras), Tim Gaines (bajo) y Robert Sweet (batería), la reunión de sus integrantes originales, la salida definitiva de su bajista histórico (reemplazado ahora por Tracy Ferrie), y la reciente incorporación de Michael a otra banda, son sólo parte del bagaje de experiencias que se conjugan en la sólida entrega de Murder by Pride.

Debo confesar que una sola canción la consideré “de relleno” al escuchar el álbum por primera vez (“Mercy Over Blame”), pero luego de varios giros del disco también convence y el álbum completo atrapa con sólidos riffs de guitarra metaleros “a la antigua” (Old School Metal), gritos estratégicamente ubicados, solos ardientes y en dupla… todo lo que un fan acérrimo de Stryper podría haber llegado a desear.

Y es que Michael y su pandilla tomaron muy en cuenta la retroalimentación de los fans al escribir y producir las canciones. A vuelo de pájaro se aprecia en la mezcla un tercio del Stryper de los primeros años, hasta In God We Trust; un tercio del estilo de Michael Sweet como solista, y un tercio de innovación incluyendo una versión de la canción “Peace of Mind” de la banda Boston, en la que Michael también es vocalista y guitarrista.

Desde los primeros riffs, ataques y gritos de “Eclipse For The Son” se revive la atmósfera de la época del The Yellow and Black Attack, al igual que al final con la nueva versión de “My Love (I'll Always Show)”; “4 Leaf Clover” en instantes parece la pista faltante en To Hell With the Devil; “The Plan”, “Murder By Pride”, “Run In You”, y “Love Is Why” tienen el sabor Pop de la etapa solista de Michael que se filtró en Reborn; mientras que “Everything” parecería poner un pie en lo que podría haberse esperado de la banda si hubiera seguido en la línea del Against the Law.

Entre lo más progresista musicalmente se encuentra “I Believe”, que en ocasiones evoca fuertemente a lo esperable de Alter Bridge. La balada basada en piano “Alive”, con el apoyo de guitarra acústica y violines, es la antítesis de “Honestly” en cuanto a letra pero logra convencer apasionadamente.

Como fan de la banda desde 1987 y seguidor de toda su discografía -- incluyendo sus proyectos por separado -- Murder by Pride funciona para mí. 12 buenas razones para seguir admirando a los pioneros que pagaron el precio por la variedad de vertientes rockeras que disfrutamos hoy en día. ¡Felices 25 años y muchos más de buen Hard Rock/Metal!
