Un álbum que entrega la mixtura de Rock, Reggae, melodía y agresividad que esperaríamos de la misma banda de hace años, pero con la madurez lírica y musical que sus integrantes tienen hoy.


¡El Punk no muere!; ¡Larga vida al Metal! El regreso de Marcos Curiel a P.O.D. parece clavar un recordatorio de esas clásicas afirmaciones, al menos en un par de pistas de When Angels & Serpents Dance, álbum debut de la banda para INO Records/Columbia y octavo álbum desde sus inicios en 1994 -- sin contar compilaciones.

Guitarras más crudas junto al equilibrio perfecto de voces melódicas y desgarradores gritos de Sonny Sandoval, marcan nuevamente la tónica del álbum, como si fuera un regreso en el tiempo a dos álbumes atrás y la creación de un universo paralelo en el que surge WA&SD… pero con los integrantes de la banda más maduros en lo personal y lo musical.

Numerosas partes revelan a Traa siguiendo con el bajo a Marcos, como también en otras se suma Wuv a la diversión marcando con la batería los cortes al unísono de la banda. Armonías, melodías, cambios de ritmo, contrapuntos; todo manejado a la perfección, ya sea por iniciativa de la banda o por intervención de su co-productor, Jay Baumgardner.

Hay Reggae, Metal, baladas, agresión sonora, gritos, un tema instrumental (“Roman Empire”), mucho Rock en diversas variantes, invitados, voces femeninas; en fin, toda una variedad de sabores en una fuente surtida que reserva agradables sorpresas para cada gusto musical, y es un deleite para los fans incondicionales que aceptaríamos hasta una Polka interpretada por P.O.D.

Curiosamente, esta vez el instrumental de Marcos no viene con título en español sino que dentro del tema se menciona reiteradamente “imperio romano”… en español. Las colaboraciones corresponden a Mike Muir en la intensa “Kaliforn-Eye-A”; The Marley Girls inmediatamente después en la relajada “I'll Be Ready”, con obvia influencia Reggae; y Page Hamilton en la agresiva “God Forbid”.

El primer sencillo y pista de título del disco -- que fue regalado como descarga digital por la banda antes del lanzamiento -- evoca composiciones anteriores como “Sleeping Awake”, resaltando la veta más prolija y comercial de la banda, que en este caso afortunadamente no representa la generalidad del álbum.

Inmediatamente después, en la recta final del álbum, la meditativa balada “Tell Me Why” plantea profundas interrogantes junto con exponer penosas realidades sociales, reiterando en el estribillo: “Dime por qué / ¿Por qué debemos pelear? / ¿Y por qué debemos matar en el nombre de lo que pensamos que es correcto? / ¡No más! ¡No a la guerra! / Porque, ¿cómo sabes?”

El sarcasmo de “Adicted”, el optimismo de “It Can't Rain Everyday” y “Shine With Me”, lo sombrío de “End of the World”, la esperanza en la confusión de “This Ain't No Ordinary Love Song” y “God Forbid”; todo se suma para pintar un cuadro de la cruda realidad presente, con sus variantes de luz y sombra, bien y mal, ángeles y serpientes. Una obra maestra que en el total vale mucho más que sus partes sumadas por separado.

P.O.D. – Testify

Después de un trabajo que pasó rápidamente al olvido, P.O.D. retoma la senda que le popularizó. Esto significa que se vuelve a escuchar Rapcore, Hardcore y Reggae, pero adhiriendo interesantes elementos de Rock/Pop melódico como una forma de mantenerse vigente según las tendencias musicales imperantes.


La banda de San Diego vuelve a la escena musical después de Payable On Death, álbum que no logró superar las expectativas que Satellite había creado. Para P.O.D. es difícil este retorno considerando que se está en un periodo post-Rapcore. Por ello, la transición y progresión a una nueva era musical no es nada fácil.

Pero antes de insertarnos en su nuevo álbum, es necesario remontarnos a su anterior producción, la cual no alcanzó a superar las 500.000 unidades en ventas, lejos de las más de cuatro millones de unidades que cedió Satellite. ¿Las razones? Cambios en los integrantes -- abandona Marcos Curiel e ingresa Jason Truby -- y una fecha límite impuesta por su casa discográfica (Atlantic Records) para el lanzamiento de este.

Fue un periodo de fuertes ajustes y tiempos ajustados. Sin embargo, la peor señal de P.O.D. fue el resultado de Payable On Death, un álbum experimental con exceso de Reggae que definitivamente decepcionó a sus fieles fans, además de perder la arista más dura en guitarra por el abandono del guitarrista original.

Después de escuchar el desazón de sus fans y de aprender de sus errores, P.O.D. lanza su segunda producción junto a Jason Truby. Puede que el resultado se acerque más a lo que todos esperaban como secuela de Satellite, pero ¿realmente logran superar esta incertidumbre?

Durante más de cincuenta minutos y a través de 13 canciones, Testify es el disco cuyo fan disfruta. Es el Rap-Rock que identifica a P.O.D. A simple vista, este retoma la senda de su ferocidad, aunque ahora un poco más melódico pero que se asemeja bastante a lo que se escuchó en Satellite... guitarras pesadas, Rap candente y olvido significativo del Reggae, aunque en dos pistas aun existe este elemento pero se percibe mejor y con más buen gusto.

Pero algo que también es interesante destacar es su lírica, la que tiene una mayor presencia espiritual, más material que obliga a pensar, aunque en ocasiones no en forma directa. Sin embargo, aun persiste el peso del legado de Marcos y el disco -- auque podría considerarse como la extensión lógica de Satellite -- aun no logra rescatar ese elemento que lo estigmatizó como banda.

“Strength Of My Life” es, definitivamente, una de las grandes canciones del disco y una de las mejores a la fecha, y es la que presenta la más marcada intención de adoración, con una lírica basada en los Salmos que expresa que la fe en Cristo es el único pasaje seguro a la eternidad.

“Mistakes & Glories” y “Teachers” son las pistas con más power, más duras del álbum, las que nos remontan a esos antaños momentos de gloria de la banda, que mezclan Rapcore, Hardcore y Rock. “If You Could See Me Now” y “Let You Down” se perfilan con cautivadoras baladas Rock, y “Roots In Stereo” rescata la faceta hacia el genero del Reggae.

“Lights Out” se tiñe de punzante Rock, al igual que “Sounds Like War”, la cual es una versión más alternativa de “Ya Mama” que apareció en el EP Warriors 2. “Goodbye For Now”, el primer single promocional del álbum, nos sumerge en un estilo Rock/Pop casi orientado a cualquier oyente y/o formato radial... una pista agradable al oído y amistosa.

“On The Grind” nos despliega una nueva faceta de P.O.D., la cual fusiona algo de Hip-hop con R&B, en la cual destaca la participación de Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E. en el Rap. “This Time” es una pieza rock/pop bastante melódica y oreja... fácil de digerir por cualquier público. “Let You Down” destaca, no por su música, sino por su mensaje, el cual retrata la experiencia personal de uno de los integrantes de la banda que conoce a una persona que buscaba el suicidio como respuesta a su desesperanza, transformándose en una de las composiciones más íntimas y que exclama que “Tu significas más”.

El disco cierra con dos interesantes pistas. “Say Hello” es una desbordarte pieza Rock, y “Mark My Word” es un agresivo Rock que esta inspirado por el libro de C.S. Lewis, The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe.

Testify no, necesariamente, es uno de los mejores discos de la banda, pero ofrece el estilo y sonido que todos sus fans añoraban escuchar, el cual cautivó no sólo al medio cristiano, sino también al mercado general que fue el primero que sucumbió ante la agresiva propuesta de Satellite.

Testify es un trabajo que busca incorporar algo de innovación y esta indagación se percibe bien. Lo importante es que esa exploración, que procura encajar con las tendencias actuales, no desecha sus raíces. Es por ello que se encuentra algo de buen Rock, Rapcore, Hardcore y Reggae.

Con esta producción, P.O.D. nos demuestra que hay banda por mucho tiempo, y ahora con más opciones para muchos más auditores y seguros nuevos fans. Testify no es un álbum cerrado al Rapcore, tiene más elementos que lo abren a otros oídos y eso es muestra de una necesaria evolución.
